About the Author
Rand Henke's life has been a remarkable journey filled with diverse experiences, worldwide travel, and a deep love for both the written word and the sea. Throughout his professional career, he has authored numerous technical, business, and government articles, reports, plans, and proposals. In his spare time, he found solace in writing poems and creative letters, often penning them on cocktail napkins he shared with his loved ones. "Expressions of a Voice in Love" marks his first collection of these personal compositions.
Born in Washington and raised in Upstate New York, Rand grew up in a loving and supportive Italian family. His parents, both World War II US Army veterans, instilled in him the values of hard work, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for the arts. After graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in biology, he went on to earn a Ph.D. in botany from Miami University in 1975.
Rand’s professional career encompassed scientific research and development, business development, and entrepreneurial business management. He worked with both technology startups and established corporations, engaging with a wide range of organizations and entities worldwide. These experiences provided him with a wealth of knowledge and a profound understanding of diverse cultures, people, and In addition to his professional pursuits, Rand’s love for the water and boating has been a constant throughout his life. He served in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary in New Orleans, where he gained extensive small-boat training and invaluable operational experience. His passion for the sea led him and his wife Cheryl to embark on countless boating adventures, sailing thousands of miles along the Southern US inland rivers and the Gulf Coast on their motor trawler, the “Cheryl Ann.”
“The motivation and inspiration for my poems and creative writings come from my ‘rich-in-diversity’ life experience,” Rand shares. Drawing from his scientific background and his observations of the world around him, he aims to ponder, think deeply, and write creatively. The compositions in this book were never initially intended for publication but were personal expressions of love and respect for his wife, Cheryl Ann. They capture both special occasions and everyday reflections, some of them spontaneously composed on cocktail napkins while sitting at various bars.
“Expressions of a Voice in Love” is organized into three distinct sections, each with its own theme. The first section presents a small assortment of poems, free verses, and handwritten notes in their original cocktail napkin form. The second section contains compositions specifically written for Cheryl Ann on special occasions or personal needs. The third section focuses on Rand’s deep passion for the sea and his experiences traveling on the MV Cheryl Ann, his cherished boat. This book is a testament to Rand’s soul, encapsulating nearly 30 years of personal reflections and expressions. It is a heartfelt and sincere compilation that invites readers to embark on a journey of love, introspection, and the boundless beauty of the sea.
